Own Worst Enemy

leave a comment »

Took a break yesterday, as it was a pretty big news day and on top of that, well,

…I had stuff to do.  LOL.

What I got called to attention after my last post on Trayvon Martin by a Facebook reader was not to forget about the other threat to our black men, both young and old alike.

That’s right: other black men.

To paraphrase, we have seen the enemy, and it is us.

As much as the pain of these racially motivated killings hurts, and the news coverage keeps us aware of the controversy over them, where is the outcry over us killing those that look just like us?

When multiple people are shot in one weekend in Chicago, how many of the victims names are publicized?  How many of the arrests make the news?

How often do you think that white men come into neighborhoods in K-Town or the 100’s and murder black men and go home?

We are our own worst enemy.

Wednesday night I’m sure that this was discussed at Sankofa (see a couple entries back), but what I want to see going forward are solutions to the problem.

For every group of people that turn a blind eye to the epidemic of black-on-black violence, there are groups like ‘The Interrupters’ ( that confront the problem head-on and go into the communities and talk to those likely to be involved in conflict with each other.

I commend them.  I also ask why programs like this, where community organizers take it upon themselves to speak to youth, are not funded, but we have plenty money to build and fund prisons and juvenile facilities.

If rehabilitation of the youth is not the goal, then prison or death are the ultimate end points for most of those in the streets.

Maybe that’s the point.

We have seen the enemy, and it is us.

So now we must make amends with ourselves before we are extinct.

If you have any solutions or thoughts, I’d love to hear them below.  The best thing we can do is start a dialogue and go from there.

There isn’t a lot of time left.
