Iota Profile #2: The Great Motivator

Editor’s Note: I had the opportunity to meet this brother when we hosted him as one of the speakers for our Black History Month series right after I entered into Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated.  Although he was serving as our International Grand Polaris at the time, I admittedly had doubts about how an older brother in a dashiki would win over a room full of cynical undergraduate students and staff, including myself.

At the end of his presentation, he had the entire audience in the ballroom chanting “Affirmation!  Action!“. I was sold.  And thus fitting that I would feature this brother on the first day of several more features of Iota Men and Sweethearts to come.

Ladies and gentlemen, meet Steve Birdine.

Please introduce yourself to the readers.

Name: Steven T. Birdine.  Line Name: “Potential Threat” (1 Kappa Omega 81-University of Illinois-Champaign-Urbana) 11-21-81.  [I served as the] 18th International Grand Polaris of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated, 2001-2005.

What drew your interest to Iota Phi Theta?

Iota’s motto: “Building A Tradition…Not Resting Upon One!” attracted my attention. I have always been  “an instrument of change” and hoped Iota would revitalize the Black Greek system.

What is your current job title/business, and why are you in that field?

Founder/President of Affirmations in Action, a consulting firm that specializes in life skills, leadership development, motivation, academic excellence, diversity, male empowerment and nurturing positive attitudes.

Please name one aspiration you hope to accomplish in the next 20 years.

I hope to continue educating, motivating and stimulating minds. One vehicle I will use is Black Male Think Tanks and/or Empowerment Conferences.

How has Iota helped you in your endeavors, personal or professional?

Iota has blessed me with some of the best friends a man can have. I have been honored to meet some people who have helped me through the toughest times in my life. I would not trade those friendships for anything in the world! Iota has also been a “learning/teaching” ground.

What would you say to anyone considering membership in Iota Phi Theta/Iota Sweethearts?

I would encourage anyone interested in Iota to not be afraid to “trod the path yet taken.” Iota still has an opportunity to add value to the Black Greek experience. But, it takes a “special man” to do Iota “right!” By “right”, I am talking about elevating standards and expectations. By being positive role models for young men. By teaching skills that can be used to make the world a better place. By “right” I am talking about men who understand, respect and follow rules…who encourage others to do the same. Men who are not afraid to look at America and the international community and actually develop programs/activities that change the world!

Men who, via their ACTIONS, will challenge other National Pan-Hellenic Council organizations to improve.
