Editor’s Note: To start the third day and first full week of profiles of Iota Men and Sweethearts, here is a brother who I personally selected not only because of his reputation in the community at SIUE and now across the river in Missouri, but because, well, he’s RUNNING things right now in Berkeley, MO, continuing the long tradition of Iota Men being involved in serving the public. Read on and you’ll see what I mean.)

Please introduce yourself to the readers.

Frank McCall, Jr. Line Name(s): The Enforcer, “FMJ”.  Alpha Beta (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville), Fall 1980

What drew your interest to Iota Phi Theta?

The initial example of brotherhood that was given to me as a freshman in college from brothers I didn’t even know. Basically, these brothers were looking out for me just because. It was only afterward that I became aware of IOTA. The brothers didn’t sell the frat–they sold themselves as solid brothers.

What is your current job title/business, and why are you in that field?

Currently, I am the Chief of Police/Director of Emergency Management for the City of Berkeley, Missouri. Additionally, I am acting in the capacity of Interim City Manager for the City. I am in the chosen field of law enforcement due to my dedication to service. I believe that success should not thrive on just individual accomplishments but it is far greater when the group as a whole succeeds. In doing so, you still experience success but it is far greater when those around you can share in the experience. Therefore we grow as a community and not just a neighborhood.

Please name one aspiration you hope to accomplish in the next 20 years?

Continued blessings to be in a position where I can be a positive example for my son, as well as those who I might encounter. It is imperative that we govern ourselves accordingly because you never know who is watching you and what type of impact you may have on that person’s life. Additionally, you want to be in a position to give continued hope and encouragement through your words and your actions, remembering that all things are possible. (When in doubt, read Philippians 4:13).

How has Iota helped you in your endeavors, personal or professional?

Iota has kept me grounded. It helped bring reality full circle. Through life a person has to identify their purpose, but at the same time, be man or woman enough to accept it. Iota assisted me in gaining the ability to make decisions and stand by the decisions I’ve made. Being proud of who and what you are regardless of the opposition.  [And], giving me lifelong friends that I can call brother.

What would you say to anyone considering membership in Iota Phi Theta/Iota Sweethearts?

Join for the right reasons. Every member has a role and a level of responsibility to the fraternity, but at the same time, every member has a role and a level of responsibility to themselves. The fraternity can definitely be an asset to you, but you must be willing to be an asset to the fraternity.
